An evaluation of antibacterial activities of Psidium guajava (L.) BABT
Sanches,Neviton Rogério; Garcia Cortez,Diógenes Aparício; Schiavini,Michelle Simone; Nakamura,Celso Vataru; Dias Filho,Benedito Prado.
The present study was designated to evaluate the antibacterial activities of aqueous and ethanol:water extracts from leaves, roots and stem bark of Psidium guajava L. The antibacterial activities of the extracts against bacteria were tested by using both microdilution assay. The aqueous extracts of P. guajava leaves, roots and stem bark were active against the gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus (MICs=500, 125 and 250 µg/ml, respectively) and Bacillus subtilis (MICs=500 µg/ml), and virtually inactive against the gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MICs >1000 µg/ml). The ethanol:water extracts showed higher antimicrobial activity as compared to aqueous extracts. Based on this finding, the ethanol:water extract of...

Antifungal activity of Piper diospyrifolium Kunth (Piperaceae) essential oil BJM
Vieira,Silvia Cristina Heredia; Paulo,Luis Fernando de; Svidzinski,Terezinha Inez Estivaleti; Dias Filho,Benedito Prado; Nakamura,Celso Vataru; Souza,Amanda de; Young,Maria Cláudia Marx; Cortez,Diógenes Aparício Garcia.
In vitro activity of the essential oil from Piper diospyrifolium leaves was tested using disk diffusion techniques. The antifungal assay showed significant potencial antifungal activity: the oil was effective against several clinical fungal strains. The majority compounds in the essential oil were identified as sesquiterpenoids by GC-MS and GC-FID techniques.

Evaluation of the Antidiabetic and Antibacterial Activity of Cissus sicyoides BABT
Beltrame,Flavio Luis; Pessini,Greisiele Lorena; Doro,Dani Luce; Dias Filho,Benedito Prado; Bazotte,Roberto Barbosa; Cortez,Diógenes Aparício Garcia.
In this work we investigated the antidiabetic and antibacterial effect of Cissus sicyoides (CS) from Brazil. Diabetic rats that received water (A group) or extracts from the aerial parts of the plant (Cs group) during four weeks were employed. After this period, serum levels of glucose, cholesterol and triglycerides were measured. Glycemia was not affected by treatment with CS. However, there was an increased cholesterol and triglyceride level in Cs group. In addition, bioassay-guided fractionation of methanolic extract from aerial parts of CS was performed for isolation of antibacterial compounds.beta-Sitosterol and sitosterol-beta-D-glucopyranoside isolated showed antibacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis with minimal inhibitory concentrations...

Identificação dos constituintes químicos da fração volátil da Calendula officinalis produzida no Paraná Horticultura Brasileira
Gazim,Zilda Cristiani; Ferreira,Gilberto Alves; Rezende,Claudia Moraes; Nakamura,Celso Vataru; Dias Filho,Benedito Prado; Cortez,Diógenes Aparicio Garcia.

Operation of a slow rate anaerobic digester treating municipal secondary sludge Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Telles Benatti,Cláudia; Granhen Tavares,Célia Regina; Dias Filho,Benedito Prado; Ribeiro Moitinho,Maria da Luz.
This study was designed to evaluate the performance of a slow rate anaerobic digester in treating secondary sewage sludge received from one local municipal wastewater treatment plant. The digester was fed by secondary sewage sludge without any previous thickening. A series of three independent batch experiments was investigated at an operation time of 60 days. The total solids (TS) in the influent sludge contained a percentage of organic matter of 59, 63 and 54%, a concentration of volatile suspended solids (VSS) of 23.7, 29.2 and 27.8 g L-1 and a chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 51.8, 32.9 and 65.7 g L-1 for the three experiments, respectively. The operation of anaerobic digestion was stable, with no noticeable scum or foaming problems. The COD reduction...

The occurrence of Aeromonas spp. in the bottled mineral water, well water and tap water from the municipal supplies BABT
Scoaris,Denise de Oliveira; Bizerra,Fernando Cezar; Yamada-Ogatta,Sueli Fumie; Abreu Filho,Benício Alves de; Ueda-Nakamura,Tânia; Nakamura,Celso Vataru; Dias Filho,Benedito Prado.
The aim of this work was to study the occurrence of Aeromonas sp in the bottled mineral water, well water and tap water from the municipal supplies. Positive samples were found for Aeromonas spp. 12.7% from the mineral water, 8.3% from the artesian water and 6.5% from the tap water. The recovery of Aeromonas spp. was significantly higher in the bottled mineral and artesian water than in the tap water from municipal supplies. The occurrence of the Aeromonas spp. did not correlate significantly with the contamination indicator bacteria (i.e. total coliforms) in the artesian water samples. However, a significant correlation was found between Aeromonas spp. and total coliforms in the both mineral water and tap water samples. The presence or absence of a...

Yeasts and filamentous fungi in bottled mineral water and tap water from municipal supplies BABT
Yamaguchi,Mirian Ueda; Rampazzo,Rita de Cássia Pontello; Yamada-Ogatta,Sueli Fumie; Nakamura,Celso Vataru; Ueda-Nakamura,Tânia; Dias Filho,Benedito Prado.
The main objective of this study was to analyse the occurrence of yeasts and filamentous fungi in drinking water as well as to investigate their correlation with the indicator bacteria of faecal pollution. Yeasts were detected in 36.6% and 11.6% of the bottled mineral on water dispensers and tap water samples from municipal system, respectively. Twenty-one (35.0%) of bottled mineral water and two (3.3%) of tap water samples were positive for filamentous fungi. For bottled mineral water 12 (20.0%) of 60 samples were positive for total coliform, compared with 3(5.0%)out of 60 samples from tap water. The mineral water from dispensers was more contaminated than tap water. Strains belonging to the genera Candida identified to the species level were C....
